Statement on the new Autism Ontario Program

Statement from QuickStart - Early Intervention for Autism (QuickStart) regarding the new  Ontario Autism Program

There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the government of Ontario’s announcement regarding changes to the autism program.

Parents and families are understandably very concerned, and none more so than those parents who have waited for IBI services only to be told their child is being removed from the wait-list.

We, like everyone, are awaiting further details on the Ontario Autism Program from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services.

QuickStart’s position:

QuickStart does not support the removal of any child from the intensive therapy wait-list.  These children and their parents have been waiting years for intensive therapy and they should receive it or sufficient funding to engage the expert intensive therapy that their children so desperately need.

The one time payment of $8,000 does not begin to replace the cost of intensive therapy that the families would have received.

QuickStart supports the vision of a right-service-at-the-right-time, individualized, expanded, and timely services for children and youth.

While our mandate is early intervention, QuickStart believes support doesn’t stop there, that it is essential to have support in place throughout the lifespan of a person with autism.

QuickStart encourages the Government of Ontario to listen to the parents and families and put the necessary transition provisions in place so no child is left behind.
