New Research Study shows promising results for toddlers with autism
In late November, 2009, a research study was released from the M.I.N.D. Institute in California proving that early intervention in toddlers works. It works with a new modified form of ABA that is geared to toddlers. The therapy, called Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) shows impressive results.
Up until now, there wasn't a specific therapy that targeted toddlers. In Ontario, IBI therapy is for 2 to 4 year olds as research shows that it is not very effective after age six.
The research study used the ESDM on 24 of the 48 toddlers (18 to 30 months old). The other 24 toddlers used the community based programs. At the end of two years, most of the 24 were on par with their peers!
The Early Start Denver Model therapy takes place in the child's natural environment, with fewer hours, 15 instead of the recommended 40 hours. It can also be taught to parents in six hours.
